Kollu Rasam Recipe / Horse Gram Rasam Recipe


This is one rasam which i make often, because it is like two in one..Whenever i make this rasam, i dont have to worry about making sidedishes. Because i used the horsegram cooking liquid(which is so healthy) for making this rasam and use the cooked horsegram to make this delicious sundal and serve it with rice. This is what i call a proper lunch.

Preparation Time : 5 mins
Cooking Time : 15 mins + 30 mins for cooking horsegram
Serves : 5 to 6

Ingredients:

Horse Gram / Kollu - 1 cup
Water - 3 cups
Oil - 1 tsp
Garlic - 6 cloves
Cumin Seeds / Jeerakam - 1 tsp
Tomatoes - 1 large chopped
Green Chillies - 1 slit
Turmeric Powder / Manjal Podi - 1 tsp
Chilli Powder - 1 tsp
Salt to taste
Sugar - 1/2 tsp
Coriander Leaves a handful chopped finely

For Seasoning:
Oil - 1 tsp
Mustard Seeds / Kaduku - 1/2 tsp
Cumin Seeds / Jeerakam - 1/2 tsp
Curry leaves - a sprig
Asafoetida / Kaya Podi / Hing - a pinch

Method:

Wash and soak horse gram overnight in cold water. You can soak horse gram in boiling hot water for just 30 mins too..

Take the drained horse gram in a pressure cooker. Cover with water and pressure cook till done. 
(i) if you are soaking it overnight, then pressure cook it for 3 whistle,simmer for 10 mins. Turn off the heat and let the pressure go all by itself.
(ii) If you are soaking it in hot water for 30 mins, then pressure cook it for 5 whistle, simmer for 15 mins, turn off the heat and let the pressure go all by itself. 

Once the horsegram is cooked, drain it. Reserve the liquid. You can use the cooked horsegram to make sundal.

Take garlic and cumin in a blender and make it into a coarse mix.

Heat oil in a sauce pan, add in the crushed garlic and cumin seeds. Saute for a min,

Add in tomatoes and green chillies. Saute for 5 min or so.

Now add in chilli and turmeric powder along with salt and sugar. Mix well.

Add in tamarind pulp and the cooking water of horse gram. Add more water if needed.

Mix everything really well and bring it to boil. once it starts to boil, turn off the heat and add in fresh coriander leaves and mix well.

Now make the seasoning, by heating oil and add in all the seasoning ingredients. Let it sizzle for a min. Pour this over the rasam and mix well.

Serve.

Pictorial:
Start by soaking horsegram / kollu in water

cover it with water and let it soak overnight

Now drain it and add it to pressure cooker

cover it with fresh water
Pressure cook
Once it is cooked

Drain it..You can use this cooked horsegram to
make Sundal ( RECIPE HERE)

This is the cooking liquid which we will be using
 for rasam

Now gather your other ingredients

Take cumin and garlic in a blender

crush them coarsely

Heat oil in a sauce pan

add in the crushed mix

saute for a min, till nice aroma comes

add in tomatoes and green chillies

Saute for couple of mins

Add in chilli powder, turmeric and salt

add little sugar for balance of taste

saute for another min

add in tamarind pulp

pour in the cooking liquid

mix well

once it reaches a boil, take it off the heat

add in chopped coriander leaves

mix well

Now make seasoning, heat oil

add in mustard, cumin and curry leaves

add in some asafoetida

when everything sizzles up

pour it over the rasam and mix well

Serve
