I have mentioned before that i couldn't find kuthiraivalli and varagu in my super market, but couple days back when i visited i found those, immediately i picked a packet of those. I also found some dried neem flowers too. So i picked a packed of those too.You will soon see a rasam recipe in my blog featuring those flowers.
I have posted quite a few millet recipes in my blog. You can check all of them here. The first recipe which i made using the barnyard millet is this upma. I am yet to make so many recipe. So stay tuned..
Preparation Time : 5 mins
Cooking Time : 25 to 30 mins
Serves : 2 to 3
Ingredients:
Barnyard Millet / Kuthiraivalli - 1 cup
Shallots / Sambar Onion - 4 chopped finely
Green Chilli - 1 chopped finely
Tomatoes - 2 chopped finely
Mustard seeds / Kaduku - 1 tsp
Urad dal / Ulundu Paruppu - 1 tsp
Cumin Seeds / Jeerakam - 1/2 tsp
Curry leaves - 1 sprig
Chilli Powder - 1 tsp
Turmeric Powder / Manjal Podi - 1 tsp
Coriander powder - 1 tblspn
Salt to taste
Coriander leaves - 3 tblspn finely chopped
Water - 2 cup
Oil - 1 tblspn
Method:
Wash barnyard millet really well in water. Drain and set aside.
Heat oil in a pressure cooker or any pan. Crackle mustard, urad dal, cumin and curry leaves.
Add in shallots and green chillies. Saute for a min.
Add in tomatoes and cook till it turns mushy.
Add in salt and all spice powders. Mix well.
Add in millet and saute well in the masala.
Add in water and bring it to boil. Simmer the pan and cover and pressure cook for 1 whistle. Let the steam go all by itself. Open the cooker and let it sit for 10 mins.
Now add in coriander leaves and fluff up with a fork.
Serve.
